Check-in at Tien Sa Lighthouse Da Nang for a stunning bay view
About Hải đăng Tiên Sa
Tien Sa Lighthouse is a fairly "hidden" viewpoint in Tho Quang Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang. This place is not too grand or crowded like popular check-in spots, but in return, it feels very authentic: the road up is a bit strenuous, the sea breeze is strong, and the view overlooking Da Nang Bay is extremely open.
When I visited, the most impressive part was the steep incline, with some sections being quite sharp (many say around a 17% slope). Walking will take a lot of effort and time, while riding a motorbike requires steady handling because there are narrow sections and curves. The plus side is that the higher you go, the more "eye-pleasing" it becomes: forest on one side, and glimpses of the blue sea and Tien Sa Port on the other.
The lighthouse area is not very large, mainly for taking photos around the tower and standing at viewpoints overlooking the sea. I like standing still for a few minutes to hear the wind and watch the boats in the bay—a very "Son Tra" feeling. According to Google, this spot is open from 5:00 to 21:00 every day, so you can time your visit early to stay cool and avoid crowds.
A small note: sometimes there is a fee/contribution at the entrance (the amount may vary over time). If you ask clearly beforehand and prepare small change, the experience will be more pleasant. Overall, Tien Sa Lighthouse is suitable for those who love coastal roads, want to take a few neat photos, and desire a quieter corner of Da Nang than usual.
Highlights
Check-in at Tien Sa Lighthouse
Take a few shots with the lighthouse tower and the road along the peninsula. The space is small but looks quite "chill" on camera if you go when the sun is light.
Admire the sea & Tien Sa Port from a high point
Stand at open viewpoints to overlook the Son Tra coastline and the port area. The clearer the sky, the more beautiful the water color.
Walk/trek the steep path to the lighthouse
If you enjoy physical activity, you can walk up (the slope is quite steep, with some parts feeling more like "climbing" than "walking"). Prepare water and walk slowly to save energy.
Hunt for sunrise or sunset on Son Tra
Go early to catch the sunrise and avoid the heat; or go in the late afternoon for beautiful golden light. The wind is strong, so remember to hold onto your hat/cap.
Tips & Notes Hải đăng Tiên Sa
Bring enough water and snacks
There are few shops in this area; you can easily get exhausted if walking or staying long. At least 1–2 bottles of water per person, plus small snacks.
Prepare small change at the gate
At certain times, there may be small fees or contribution requests. Having small change ready helps with quick transactions and avoids misunderstandings.
Choose a cool time to go
Early morning or late afternoon is both pleasant and great for photos. The midday sun on Son Tra is quite harsh, and steep roads can easily drain your energy.
Check fuel, brakes, and tires before heading up the peninsula
The road has slopes and curves; weak engines or poor brakes/tires will not be safe, especially when going downhill.
Go slow and stay safe on steep sections
If trekking, take short rest intervals; if riding a motorbike, avoid reckless overtaking and watch for oncoming traffic.
Respect the space and the caretakers
Be polite when asking for information/ticket prices, do not litter, and do not climb fences or enter restricted areas.
