About the tour
Heritage Journey: Da Nang - Marble Mountains - Hoi An is the kind of afternoon-to-evening tour that we locals in Da Nang often take when we want a quick "change of scenery": starting with a coffee to set the mood, a light trek at Marble Mountains, and then strolling through the ancient town as the lights come on. Departing around 14:45 means the sun isn't too harsh, yet you're still in time to catch Hoi An bathed in the golden light of late afternoon.
Actual Schedule: I usually meet everyone at a cafe with a pleasant atmosphere to gather the group easily. The meeting point this time is Reply 1988 Cafe. The shop has brown-beige tones with many retro corners; sitting for 30–45 minutes is just enough: sip a coffee, take a few photos, and recharge before moving out.
From the city center to Marble Mountains takes about 15 minutes by motorbike. Once here, you'll realize there's quite a bit of walking, especially if you want to reach the high points and visit caves and pagodas. A small tip: bring water and choose shoes with good grip; slippery sandals on the stone steps can be quite "intense." I usually spend about 1.5 hours: walking and stopping to admire the stones, watching the light stream through the cave openings for photos. This part truly feels like "heritage" as nature and traces of faith intertwine; going slowly makes it much more interesting.
Leaving Marble Mountains, I stop quickly at Non Nuoc stone carving village. It's only about 20 minutes but worth seeing the small workshops and the stone blocks being chiseled with your own eyes. If you plan to buy stone souvenirs, I suggest asking carefully about the stone source and shipping methods, as they are heavy and easily chipped if packed poorly.
By late afternoon, drive towards Hoi An for about half an hour. I usually stop at the Hoai River Square area to park for convenience and then start walking. It's a bit crowded during peak hours, so if you're in a group, agree on a clear meeting point to avoid getting lost. From here, a few minutes of walking leads to the Japanese Covered Bridge; the best photo angle is usually when the lights just turn on and the sky is still a light blue. Then, head over to Tan Ky Ancient House to see the wooden interior, courtyards, and how they maintain the old way of life in the middle of the street.
For dinner, I chose Ba Buoi chicken rice. The shop is small, so if you go on the weekend, you should book in advance or go a bit early to avoid waiting. Ordering a portion of chicken rice and an extra plate of salad is just enough to stay full for more walking.
My favorite part of the Heritage Journey: Da Nang - Marble Mountains - Hoi An is the night market section. Around 18:00–19:00 is the best time to walk and take photos of lanterns without it being too crowded. I usually have a light snack while strolling along the Hoai River, then wait until a bit later to head back to Da Nang (about 45 minutes drive). Going in such a circle is fulfilling without being exhausting.
If you want a neat outing with moderate trekking, lantern-lit streets, and authentic Hoi An food, then the Heritage Journey: Da Nang - Marble Mountains - Hoi An is a very suitable choice for a free afternoon schedule.
