About the tour

Escaping the City to the Suburbs: A Slow Day at Nam O Fishing Village is the kind of tour I often invite friends in Da Nang to join when we need a "change of scenery" without traveling too far. Located right at the foot of Hai Van Pass, Nam O is close enough for a day trip yet peaceful enough to make you feel time slowing down. This journey is perfect if you enjoy a hot breakfast, visiting craft villages, exploring fishing village culture, and relaxing by the rocky coastal reefs.

08:00 Start with a bowl of hot porridge. I usually go by motorbike for flexibility; it only takes a short ride to reach the Hai Van area. The opening spot is the 24/7 "Chao Cho" (Waiting Porridge) shop on Ngo Xuan Thu Street. This type of porridge is pre-cooked and served instantly, perfect for mornings when you want something light yet warming. A small tip: if traveling in a group of 3–4, order some side dishes to add variety, and remember to drink warm water as the morning sea breeze can be quite chilly.

From porridge to the story of fish sauce. Just a few minutes' drive away is the Nam O fish sauce making area. I love visiting a traditional facility like “Huong Lang Co” because you can not only buy pure fish sauce but also hear them talk about the anchovy season, the fermentation process, and why Nam O fish sauce has such a “robust” aroma. If you plan to buy some as a gift, ask carefully about which type is for dipping or braising, and request secure packaging as motorbike storage can easily trap the smell.

A short walk to touch the village rhythm. From the fish sauce village, I usually stroll over to the Nam O Whale Temple (Lang Ngu Ong). It’s not large, but the atmosphere is very serene. This is where fishermen worship the Whale—a maritime belief. Remember to dress politely, speak softly, and if you meet the temple keeper, feel free to say hello; they often share very authentic stories about the fishing village.

Lunch with budget-friendly seafood. Near Nam O beach, there are 24/7 seafood eateries, perfect if you are in a group and want to linger. I usually choose simple, easy-to-eat dishes, then take a short break to save energy for the rocky reefs in the afternoon. If you’re riding a motorbike, remember to drink moderately; it's more comfortable if you're in a car with a group of friends.

Afternoon relaxing at Nam O Reef. This is the part I look forward to most in Escaping the City to the Suburbs: A Slow Day at Nam O Fishing Village. The layered black rocks, covered in lush green moss during the season, are incredibly photogenic. Practical tips: wear sandals with good grip (the rocks are slippery), time your visit during low tide for easier posing, and bring a light jacket as the wind here is stronger than in the city center. Sitting with a cup of coffee or a drink you brought along, listening to the waves, is enough to close a peaceful day.

If you need a schedule that isn't rushed, featuring food, culture, and the sea to breathe deeply, then Escaping the City to the Suburbs: A Slow Day at Nam O Fishing Village is a very fitting choice for a weekend in Da Nang.
