Is the road to Dong Giang Heaven’s Gate difficult for the elderly?
I once took my parents to Dong Giang Heaven’s Gate, and before the trip, I had the exact same concern: with such steep and winding mountain passes, could elderly parents handle it? The short answer: yes, they can, but you need to prepare properly. Here is what I learned from our actual trip.
What is the actual road like?
From Da Nang to Dong Giang Heaven’s Gate is about 100km, following Highway 14B, taking about 2-4 hours depending on speed and rest stops. To be honest: there are many steep sections and sharp curves, similar to the Hai Van Pass. This is a real mountain route, not a flat, easy-to-drive road.

The “Lifesaver” for the elderly: Cable car
This is the most important thing you need to know: since mid-2024, the resort has put into operation a 1.6km long cable car line, taking only about 7 minutes from the foot of the mountain to the top of Bao Lam peak. Previously, if you wanted to reach the summit, you had to trek through the forest for hours; now, that is no longer necessary. The cable car ticket is usually included in the sightseeing combo, with no extra charge. In other words, the “hardest” part of the trip (mountain climbing) has been almost completely solved.

Should you go by car or ride a motorbike yourself?
For the elderly, I recommend going by car (private car, rental with a driver, or a tour) instead of riding a motorbike across the passes yourself. Sitting in a car is both safer on steep curves and much less exhausting than having to drive yourself for 2-4 hours on mountain roads.
Specific health notes
- If parents are prone to motion sickness, they should take motion sickness medication about 30 minutes before departure and choose a front seat to reduce bumping.
- Break the journey into segments; don’t try to go all at once – stopping for water and walking around for a few minutes helps a lot.
- Bring blood pressure or cardiovascular medication (if currently using) as the resort is quite far from medical centers.
- Choose to go during the dry season (around March-September) instead of the rainy season (October to February), because the rainy season makes the passes slippery and much more dangerous.
- The climate at the top is cool with quite strong winds – bring a light jacket for the elderly even during summer.
Local tips
Depart early in the morning (6-7 AM) to avoid the intense midday sun when sightseeing outdoors, and to have more time to rest along the way without rushing. Entrance tickets are currently around 300,000 VND/adult; adding cable car/glass bridge tickets brings the combo to about 450,000 VND/person (reference price July 2026, subject to change, so check before going).
In summary, the road up to Dong Giang Heaven’s Gate is indeed steep, but it’s not a “mission impossible” as many imagine – especially since the cable car opened, the hardest part is almost solved. Just choose to go by car, pick a dry day, and prepare health-wise, and parents can fully enjoy the trip.
