Kim Bong Carpentry Village - The 500-Year-Old Cradle of Woodworking in Hoi An
About Kim Bong Carpentry Village - The 500-Year-Old Cradle of Woodworking in Hoi An
Kim Bong Carpentry Village is a long-standing traditional craft village located across the Thu Bon River, opposite the ancient town. It is considered the "cradle" of Hoi An's carpentry with a history spanning over 500 years. Since Quang Nam was administratively linked with Da Nang, Kim Bong has also become a very convenient destination to include in a Da Nang - Hoi An exploration itinerary.
I visited Kim Bong in the afternoon, and the way there was quite easy: from the center of Hoi An, it takes just a few minutes by motorbike to reach the wharf, or you can choose to take a boat across the river for a true craft village experience. The atmosphere is quiet with plenty of greenery, feeling completely detached from the crowds of the ancient town. On Google, this spot is rated 4.6/5 (182 reviews), and my actual experience was "true to expectations": friendly, welcoming, and easy to interact with the artisans.
What I liked most were the hands-on activities: watching craftsmen carve wood, trying out basic carving strokes (with meticulous guidance and touch-ups from experts to ensure a neat finished product), and listening to stories about the village's history. Some places also offer mat-weaving experiences, which are quite fun and suitable for both groups of friends and families with young children.
A small note: the scale of the village currently doesn't have as many practicing households as before, so if you expect the "entire village to be buzzing with workshops," you might find it a bit quiet. In return, there are still showrooms and shops selling woodwork and souvenirs at fairly affordable prices. At certain times, there is an entrance fee, so you should prepare some small cash for tickets or to support the craft village.
If you want a relaxing half-day trip to learn more about local culture and bring home a handmade item, Kim Bong is a choice well worth trying.
